The Big Lie: Obama the America Hating Socialist
Andrew Sullivan takes on the phony narrative constructed by the GOP over the last two years.
Among other things is the sudden concern for deficits displayed by the GOP. For eight years their motto was essentially Cheney’s remark that “deficits don’t matter.” And deficits were hardly the reason voters rejected the GOP in 2006 and 2008. But it has now become Republican doctrine that they were “fired” by the people for running deficits.
Even more disingenuous is the use of selective quotes to make Obama appear anti-American, at least in the sense that he rejects American exceptionalism. It’s untrue that he has rejected it, but the narrative is the GOP’s most important concern, thus full and accurate quotations be damned.
The question of Obama as a Republican is especially incisive.
